Children's illnesses and injuries, though frequent, are almost always unexpected. Thus we have an open door access policy: we will see any child on any day the office is open. Please note that a potentially serious illness and/or antibiotic prescription will never be managed over the phone. When a new illness occurs, please call for an appointment as soon as possible. Our lines open at 7 am Monday through Friday. Your time is important. Calling early gives you more availability of times. Please do not wait until late afternoon for a problem that has been present all day. If you are unsure or concerned, feel free to call our office and speak with one of our nurses any time. They can determine if it is something easily managed at home, or needs an appointment. We will schedule one that will best suit both the health of your child and your availability. Also, if your child is under treatment and has not improved as expected or within 48 hours, please call for a re-evaluation appointment.
Because fevers, illnesses, and injuries never can be scheduled, we offer walk-in times: 8 to 10 am and 4 to 6:30 pm Weekdays for your convenience and ease of mind. SICK ONLY NOT FOR PHYSICALS. LATE DAY SCHEDULED APPOINTMENTS
Life is busy, hectic, and often unplanned, so we extended these appointments until 5:30 Weekdays. These slots can be boon in the midst of all the carpooling, activities, work and traffic we all go through in the metro- DC area.
We want your child to be their happiest healthiest self. The most important (and most enjoyable) way we do this is to see your child for a series of Well Child visits/ Physicals. At each visit, we will follow your child's growth and development, answer any questions or concerns you may have, and provide any needed vaccinations/screenings. Please schedule these in advance so that you have your pick of appointments that best suit your schedule.
Recommended Schedule of Physicals/ Well-child Visit
All children should have an annual physical once a year after 3 years of age through college.
Vaccinations are the single most important public health intervention. The recommended vaccines and their schedule are based on years and years of data, study and research that involved millions of children and innumerable scientists and doctors.
Because of vaccines, parents no longer see a child with whooping cough, polio, measles and other such diseases. In recent times, some parents have chosen not to vaccinate because of the possible connection between autism and vaccines. This has been unfounded and completely discredited. Also breaking up or delaying vaccines can be perilous for your child. In the past, vaccine-preventable diseases caused high mortality in children and if survived, possible severe incapacitation. We should also remember that the Washington DC area has many recent travelers that can be carrying those diseases into our communities and therefore to our children.
We urge all children and young adult receive all of the scheduled vaccines according recommended by the Center for Disease Control and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Please feel free to discuss any questions or concerns you may have about vaccines with any one of us.

With breastfeeding, there are so many questions (from beginning to end) and often very little real support. We are excited to offer a breastfeeding hour to all our moms who are thinking about, trying to or are currently breastfeeding. Our nurse practitioner has experience in lactation and helping moms breastfeeding through direct observation with you and your baby. Burke Pediatrics sees patients through age 23 years. When many children reach high school, they sometimes ask if they should move on to an "adult" medical provider. They are often interested to find that pediatricians are trained to handle adolescent/young adult medical problems. Also they are surprised to find that while they often feel odd in a waiting room filled with younger children, the alternative would be sitting among elderly adults at an internal medicine office.
These appointments are to keep our patients from using and waiting in emergency facilities. Our phones open at 8 am on the Saturdays we are in. Walk-ins and calls encouraged. A weekend fee is billed to insurance. Our after hours answering service is staffed by pediatric nurses and provides phone coverage when we are not open.
ATTENTION DEFICIT VISITS
Please first make an appointment to discuss the issue with one of our doctors so they can then guide the process. After that, please comply with regularly scheduled follow-ups.
Phones open at 7 am and close at 7 pm Monday through Friday for appointments and advice. Nurse advice is available all day, everyday. Please tell the nurse exactly what your concern is. Because, providers are busy with office patients, they can only take phone calls after nurse triage. Physicians will return calls as time allows which may be after office hours; do not delay your child's care by refusing to talk to a nurse or expecting a "call-back" during office hours.
A practice physician is on call 24 hours everyday, all year
We contract with a professional medical answering triage service through the nationally known Rainbow Children's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Their triage service is staffed with pediatric certified registered nurses. They use nationally established and accepted triage advice protocols to help assist and advise you. They can comfortably handle most phone calls. When warranted, they will either forward your call to the physician-on-call or direct you to the emergency room. Non-urgent advice will be given directly to you. Sometimes the nurse or you may choose to have the Provider-on-call paged. If your call has not been returned within 60 minutes, please call the answering service again. This is to ensure that the doctor on call received the correct phone number. Our office receives reports of all calls and reviews them each morning; this report becomes part of your child's medical record. After review and when appropriate, we often call for follow-up. Charges are rendered to the patient for the use of this service if it is not a true medical emergency.
Health Insurances require an office visit for this service. This policy is a contract requirement with your insurer. Also, we will be able to give a list of the specialists in the area. Please make sure that the one you choose is approved by your insurance. You must schedule the appointment and call our office with details. Be sure to give us the name of the physician you are seeing, location, along with the date and time of the appointment so we can generate a referral through your insurance. Many insurances and specialty offices need an original referral, so please make sure you have one before that visit. WE CANNOT BACKDATE ANY REFERRALS. Please allow at least 3 business days for completion.
Please check with your pharmacy first to see if you have any refills left. Only certain medications can be safely refilled without a patient visit and reevaluation. If we request that the child come in, we ask for your understanding. It is for your child's safety. With no patient visit, as well as chart research and pharmacy notification, please give us 2-3 business days to complete the refill. A fee will be assessed for refills without an office visit.
Treatment over the phone is dangerous! We do not prescribe medication over the phone. We do try to give advice but sometimes in our best judgment, the child should be seen. In that case, we will offer an appointment.
LABORATORY TEST AND IMAGING RESULTS
Routine tests ordered with a well child visit (Blood count, cholesterol, lead) should be considered normal if you are not called back. Other test results will be called to you whether normal or abnormal. Please call us within a week of doing any lab test or imaging study if you have not already heard from us. For STAT/ Emergent tests or imaging results, you will be notified as soon as we have it.

VISION SCREENING TECHNOLOGY
Burke pediatrics has recently acquired state-of-the-art technology for assessing vision in children this young his one year of age. This instrument is very much like a camera that “measures” the child’s visual acuity. All the child is required to do is look at the SPOT instrument. We will measure the child’s visual acuity at each annual visit and upon request or with a medical indication.
